Excerpt from New Amsterdam - Tess:

"How did a tomboy from Asheville end up in New York – Downtown even?” asks Levi.

Cracking her knuckles, Thessaly laughs nervously. This is that moment – the one where the truth becomes a part of the story arc. Turning into him, she admits, “I followed a boy.”

Levi's mouth hovers near Thessaly’s lips as he whispers, “You don’t like to follow.”

Caught up in the sexual tension, Thessaly's mouth twitches in anticipation. “And you?” she hushes.

“I nudge.”

Excerpt from Sky of Dreams (Passionate Hearts #1)

The sound of churning gravel and the purr of a car engine drew Sky’s attention to the road. A silver Jag slowed to a stop in front of Gran’s. His heart clutched in his chest, air stilled in his lungs.

Katie.

He didn’t need to see the shimmer of her glossy auburn hair reflecting in the setting sun to recognize her. The blistering pull of every cell in his body and the rush of conflicting emotions rolling through him were proof enough. Anger, desire, sadness, and rejection brought with them a sting that burned the backs of his eyes. Forcing down the lump of emotion clogging his throat, Sky tried to tamp down the familiar vibration humming through his body. A part of him wanted to whoop for joy before yanking Katie into his arms kissing her senseless. Another part of him wanted to forget she even existed…wipe away the ball-churning memories that flooded his brain, and focus on the hurt and anger he felt when Gran broke the news, Katie had left. Yet, all he could think about was touching her, kissing her, holding her in his arms, before he dragged her beneath him.

Skimming a cursory glance over the ridiculously expensive sports car, Sky’s shoulders sagged. Katie had achieved her dreams all right, it was staring him in the face, sending feelings of inadequacy deep into his bones. He hadn’t had a damn thing to offer her at eighteen; he sure as hell didn’t now. Sky couldn’t compete with the riches she’d apparently become accustomed to. It didn’t take a genius to see he could only rate as a long lost lover. Reality stung, like a slap to the face.

Katie had ripped his heart out and stomped it to shit—a fact he’d do well to remember. But it didn’t erase the desire to love her again, or the growing need inside his jeans. Disgusted by his traitorous libido, her return only served to make him pick at the scabs of the past, and douse them in salt water. Sky clenched his jaw.

“Looks like you got everything you wanted, Katie,” he mumbled with disdain. “I’m sure you’re happy now.”

No sooner had the words rolled off his tongue than the sounds of gut-wrenching sobs filled his ears.

What the hell?

Tossing down the shovel, Sky mopped the sweat off his face before storming toward the Jag. Katie’s sobs grew louder and more pitiful. Like fine crystal, the flimsy barrier he’d erected around his heart, began to crack, splinter, and finally shatter. Standing next to the open window, Sky watched tears drip from beneath her shroud of silky, red hair. The waning sun reflected in each drop, casting them in a shimmer of gold, as they spilled onto Katie’s lap.

His guts and heart clenched in tandem. Sky had only seen Katie cry once: the first time they made love; those had been tears of joy. There wasn’t an ounce of happiness in the guttural sobs ringing in his ears. What the hell had happened to her? This wasn’t the strong, resilient woman he’d once loved. Seeing Katie in the throes of such brutal sorrow gutted him.

In an instant, his heart caught fire with the need to protect: burning away the poisonous animosity he’d felt moments ago. Instantly, flames of love reignited—the powerful kind they’d once shared—and Sky only wanted to scoop her into his arms so he could comfort and slay the demons causing her this pain.

Writer with a Cause

Do you ever look around and think that a lot of senseless stuff goes on in the world? Let’s take for example, violence. Why does it have to exist? What? People can’t find better things to do with their time? How about poverty? Hunger? Why in the name of all that is holy is it too hot for me to stand outside for ten minutes on a Monday afternoon, then pouring buckets of rain on Tuesday?

It’s the tenth rainy day here in the Queen City (the kind of day that makes you think of Noah’s flood), and I’m trying to think of the best way to answer a question that has been posed to me… Where did the idea “Writer with a Cause” come from, and what does it mean to me?

The truth?

Maybe I did come up with the title, but I certainly didn’t invent the idea.

Long before I ever came to be, there existed a belief that certain injustices needed to be addressed; action required to abolish them. From sit-ins to marches, speeches and protests, voices have spoken against all forms of evil – slavery, child abuse, domestic violence and many more issues that have no place in a society as technologically advanced as ours.

That’s what I thought the day I decided to write A Rebel in Jericho.

I was living in Michoacán, Mexico at the time (fighting for a cause of my own) when I got quite ill with Typhus. I visited the local pharmacy which had a small doctor’s office in the back room. While waiting for my turn to be seen, I saw a newspaper on the table beside me. “Mujeres Sin Rostro” (Women Without Faces) was printed in big, bold letters across the front. I thought the article might have been about a new suspense movie coming out, or something else equally interesting. After all, I was a tourist blinded by all the beauty of a foreign country. So I flipped open the paper and started reading the most astounding stories about abducted women who had no control over their lives. Some forced into slavery, others choosing it after feeling they had no options, all the women were at the complete mercy of others.

I asked my husband about the article. Was it true? Could this kind of evil exist in such a beautiful place? Of course, my husband said, especially since you wouldn’t expect it.

As a former Guardian ad Litem and activist at heart, it made me angry to think that women (and even little girls) could be abused in such a way. That’s when I began doing research and came to learn that this wasn’t a Mexico problem. This was a world problem. In places big and small – even American cities you would least expect – there are rings of smugglers and pimps trafficking people every day for sex, drugs, sweat shops and even organs. I learned that even my hometown – a city praised for its medical, financial and technology contributions – was a hub for human trafficking.

I wanted to do something. I wanted to make a difference. However, the only thing I knew how to do was write stories.

That’s when Catalina came to life and I wrote the first book in the series, A Rebel in Jericho. I decided that I would pen books that could raise money for causes dear to me. Then I chose to write in the genre of inspirational romance because I believe that 1) people can do with a little hope that they don’t have to face their hardships alone, and 2) love really does conquer all – especially tragedies like modern day slavery.

Stamping out this kind of evil doesn’t occur overnight, though. I know it will take more than one book to raise awareness and really get people to care about this fight. So I created the series, The Jericho Resistance, because that’s what we need. Resistance. We need to resist the habit of looking the other way when injustice makes us uncomfortable. We need to resist the urge to quit the good fight when it seems like our army is too small. That’s what being a writer with a cause means to me… to join in the resistance.

Excerpt from A Rebel In Jericho (The Jericho Resistance #1):

“A penny for your thoughts?” Catalina regretted asking almost as soon as the words were out. The less she knew about him, the better. Right?

Continuing to lean against the side, Matthew gave her a once-over.

He decided to have a little fun with her.

“Only a penny? Is that what people are charging nowadays? Not me. My thoughts are worth a whole nickel.” The laughter in his tone danced in his playful eyes, their brilliance shining like blue gems. A slow, infectious grin spread across Matthew’s face. He looked like a mischievous little boy who was trying to buy his way out of trouble after being caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Catalina bit her lip in a desperate attempt to remain serious, but it was of little use.

Charmed by her softened features, Matthew took a slow step towards her. He raised a tentative hand and pushed back a curl that had worked its way loose.

Catalina’s breath stilled as the light touch of his fingers slowly trailed along her cheek. Her beautiful eyes and full mouth were almost irresistible, and he wondered if she tasted as sweet as she looked.

Unasked questions blazed from his eyes, making the cage that she was trying to construct around her heart unhinge. The sudden attraction hit her hard. She forced herself to look away and break the spell. Falling for her escort was not part of the plan.

“Look!” Catalina pointed towards the bank. “We’re just about there.”

“Then I guess we best get back to the car.” Disappointment laced his words. She didn’t have any romantic notions about him, so he best leave it at just friends.

No more goo-goo eyes.

“It shouldn’t take too long to get it started.” He picked up the conversation again as he paced back to the car with a determined step. “It’s warm out. So she doesn’t need to be cranked or anything.”

Catalina questioned his sudden change in mood. She was grateful at the flow of normal conversation between them. Still, it felt like something was suddenly missing. “Well, I suppose that’s a good thing.” She plodded along behind him, dissatisfied when they reached the Model T. He took her hand and helped her up and into the front seat. “Shouldn’t I ride in the—”

“You’ll get a better view of things while we’re driving from up here.” He cut her off, patting the hood of the car for emphasis – a friendly grin that promised an exciting ride. After all, it was a long trip to Nogales. “Besides, it’ll be more fun.”

More fun? Hmmm...more trouble maybe. Definitely more dangerous.

Excerpt from Fated To Be Mine (Fated #2):

Andrew dips his head, drawing my gaze back up to his. “Tell me what you’re thinking? I know you get locked in your head, creating stories and scenes which aren’t real. I know you feel insecure about us, but I can’t begin fixing this until you talk to me. I need to know what you’re thinking and feeling.”

I sigh and play with his fingers again. “I’m playing the ‘what if’ game in my head. What if I wasn’t that stupid insecure girl? What would have happened to Sarah if I would have just trusted you to think of me as more than just a fling?”

Andrew’s hand squeezes tighter around my fingers. “You were never a fling. Why didn’t you believe me when I told you this before?” His voice gets quiet, apparently displeased I still thought that way after he had reassured me over and over that we weren’t.

“My insecurities tend to get in the way more often than not, creating roadblocks which aren’t there and making things into more than what they seem. And I’m trying not to be that way with you, but it was so fast, so sudden, so…”

“Perfect,” he says, completing my sentence for me.

“Yeah, perfect. There just had to be something wrong with us. Nothing in my life has ever been easy or…perfect. So I got scared and went into flight mode. I couldn’t fight because I knew who I would be picking the war against…me.”

With a gentle sweep, Andrew’s knuckles graze my cheek, brushing away a tear that somehow had leaked from my eye. His features soften as he continues stroking his hand up and down my face. I feel guilty for my behavior from before, letting my pride and fears rule my heart, knowing deep down there was never any hope of leaving this man. If all of this is true, why didn’t he say something when I blurted out those stupid words?

“Andrew?” I ask with a trembling voice.

“You’re thinking again, I can see it in your eyes. Talk to me, Tessa. Ask me anything you want and I will answer it. You must know by now there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you.”

Maybe he didn’t hear me that night. And if so, would it be worth bringing up now? How can I ask him if he heard my words and not be hurt if he didn’t return the sentiment? And deep down do I honestly believe that he doesn’t? Andrew flew across an ocean for me, a week before he knew he was going to see me. What does that say about him? Is that the action of a man who just likes a girl?

“It’s just…I don’t know how to…”

“Do you still love me?” Andrew blurts out.

I freeze, unsure of what to do. Oh God, he did hear me. My head pulls back, allowing his hand to drop from my cheek. A hurt look crosses his face at my reaction, making my own flinch from causing him more unnecessary pain.

“Andrew, I…”

“Please tell me you haven’t stopped. Tell me I’m not too late, that you haven’t already moved on with another man.”

A million things swirl in my brain, all jumbling together, creating a vortex of emotions and scenarios, none of which can be easily picked out. “Andrew, it’s more complicated than a simple yes or no answer. That night…I didn’t mean to…there were so many emotions in me…I just…” I’m stammering like an idiot, unable to form a coherent sentence if my life depended on it. And right now it almost seems like it does.

“Tell me you love me. Tell me there’s still a chance of that love between us. We can find our way back to each other and heal the pain we’ve both caused by our lack of communication and misunderstandings. That night, that glorious, magical night, was the best night of my life. I couldn’t forget it if I tried and won’t forget it for as long as I live. I want to create many more nights exactly like it. I want your mornings, your afternoons, and your nights. I want them all. So I need to know that the woman who is the center of my whole world and is sitting right here beside me after I never thought she would, still loves me.”

Excerpt from Terms of Service:

“What’s going on with you, Hannah?” He spoke gently.

Her head dropped. Finally, in exasperation, she mumbled, “I don’t want to talk about it.” Then she looked away.

“Okay,” he said calmly. “Let’s start with an easier question. Where did you go when you left the house today?” Gavin concentrated on maintaining a calm exterior, even if it killed him.

She sighed. “I had to go to a child support hearing.” She stared at him with wide eyes.

It was as though she was willing him to ask the right questions so she could give him the correct answers, the answers he so desperately needed. “So, Amy was with you,” Gavin said. Hannah nodded in response. “All right. I take it the hearing went badly?” He hadn’t had to deal with this aspect of divorce proceedings.

Suddenly, the dam broke and Hannah spewed forth the details of the hearing. “He brought the stripper with him,” she mourned. “I can’t believe he brought her with him!” She set her mug on the railing as she shook from the emotion of it all.

Gavin studied her. Was she still attracted to her ex? Was this why she was so upset? Or, he desperately hoped, was it something else? “Do you still want to be with him?” Truth be told, he had to know.

The look on Hannah’s face said it all. She was revolted, disgusted at the idea. “No,” she said adamantly. “I have no desire to ever be with Brett again.”

Now they were getting somewhere. “Then what’s troubling you so?”

She exhaled slowly for a moment. “I hate having it shoved in my face.” She shook her head. “I hate having to see he’s happy with her in a way he never was with me.” She fixed her expressive eyes on him. “It’s knowing I’m not enough. It’s having my pride continually shattered. It’s the constant blow to my ego. It’s feeling so alone…” Her voice trailed off.

“Is that what you feel?” Gavin asked incredulously. “You feel alone?” He opened his arms and took a step toward her, but she backed away. “Let me be close to you,” he said.

Hannah stared at him like a deer caught in headlights. “I can’t,” she murmured, shaking her head.

He tried a new approach. “Don’t you ever want to be close to someone? No strings? No expectations?”

“Yes, but…”

“But what?” He walked toward her with open arms and watched helplessly as she backed away.

“I’m too scared,” she admitted in a whisper. This time she didn’t back away, this time she didn’t drop her gaze.

Gavin knew she was out of space. There was no more room for her to back away. He had her pinned against the corner of the railing. Slowly he stepped towards her as if he were trying to tame a wild mare. “I won’t hurt you,” he murmured, reaching for her.

She closed her eyes. “I don’t believe you.”

Gavin wrapped his arms around her and drew her into the warmth of his embrace. He could feel her stiffen at first, unwilling to yield, unwilling to admit defeat. Instead of being discouraged by her reaction, he welcomed the challenge. Ever so gently, he caressed her back and ran his fingers through her hair. Slowly, almost unnoticeably, she began to melt into him. “What do you have to lose?”

She murmured something against his chest. He could’ve sworn he heard her say, “My heart.” Something inside him shattered. Gradually her emotions broke and the tears, which had remained unspent for so long, sought release. He wiped and kissed them away.

“Let me hold you tonight,” he murmured against her temple. He could feel her begin to stiffen again. “We won’t go to bed. We’ll just build a fire and lay out here under the stars all night long.” He hadn’t really thought this through. The old Gavin would’ve checked the weather report to ensure the temperature wouldn’t drop too low, and there was zero chance of rain overnight. This new Gavin cared only about making Hannah happy at any cost.

There would be blankets and a fire to protect them from the chill. There was a covered lanai to protect them from the rain. All that mattered was Hannah felt comforted and loved.

Excerpt from Songbird:

Traffic’s insane, but I finally make it to Callie’s apartment just after two. I anxiously knock on the door, ridiculously eager to get my hands on her. Maybe she’ll be wearing some flimsy lingerie. Maybe she’ll be naked. My mind’s busy conjuring all the possibilities when she opens the door . . . wearing a sweatshirt and jeans.

“Hey,” she says softly, stepping aside to let me in.

“Hey. You okay?”

She looks pale as a ghost. Is she sick? She looks sick. Maybe I should call an ambulance. Or my dad.

“I’m okay.” Callie leads me over to the sofa. “Look, Devin, I know you probably have some plans for us for tonight, but that won’t be happening.”

“Oh.” Disappointment floods me, but if the nauseated look on her face is any indication, it’s probably best. Besides, there’s the next night.

And the next.

“But we need to talk, so I’m glad you’re here. I have something I need to tell you.” She abruptly jumps to her feet and walks toward her kitchen. “Would you like something to drink?”

I can’t tell if she’s being a good hostess or simply stalling, but I ask for a beer. It looks like I’m gonna need it. I hadn’t pegged her for the kind of woman who needs to talk about her feelings.

When she returns to the living room, Callie hands me a bottle and sits down next to me. I notice she only brought one.

“You’re not drinking?”

She curls her feet beneath her. “Unfortunately, no. I won’t be drinking for a long time.”

I’ve had it with the riddles.

“All right, what’s going on? My brother and his girlfriend threatened to murder me if I make you cry. Something’s obviously up with you because you just want to talk.”

Her forehead creases. “Don’t you ever just talk to a woman?”

“Not if I can help it.”

“Why not? The girls you usually date don’t have enough sense to carry on an intelligent conversation?”

“I don’t date, Callie.”

“I see. You just sleep with them.”

“Sometimes. Is there something wrong with that?”

“And are you careful?”

“Careful?”

“Safe,” she says softly. “We didn’t use protection. I just wondered if that’s typical for you.”

Oh. It’d be easy to blame the alcohol, but honestly, using protection was the very last thing on my mind that night.

“No, that’s not typical. I’m sorry about that.”

“So am I.”

Callie seems far more relaxed after my apology. Maybe this night won’t be an epic failure after all. I slide closer to her, but she raises her hand in warning.

“We’re not finished.”

I groan and lean back against the couch.

“Devin, I need you to listen. Something happened that weekend. I’m almost positive you won’t want to sleep with me after you hear what I’m about to say.”

“I seriously doubt that.”

“I don’t.” Callie sits up a little straighter and squares her shoulders. “I want you to know I expect nothing from you. Our weekend together was a mistake, and I’ll deal with the consequences of it. I don’t know exactly what I’m going to do at this point, but I thought you should at least know what’s going on.”

“What’s going on?”

Her eyes flood with tears.

“Devin, I’m pregnant.”

Pregnant.

Pregnant?

I stare at her. She stares at me. I watch her closely, hoping that at any moment she’s going to burst out laughing.

But she’s not laughing. She’s crying.

I hear Lorie’s voice in my suddenly throbbing head.

Don’t make her cry.

“Why . . . why are you telling me?”

She wipes her eyes. “What do you mean?”

“You’re assuming it’s mine?”

“Of course it’s yours!”

I snort. “Really? How can you be so sure? Maybe it was that bartender in the hotel’s piano bar. Or maybe it was the guy who sat with you at the reception. Or maybe—just maybe—it was the photographer you were with tonight. You two seem pretty close.”

Even as the bitter words drip off my tongue, I know better. Her face is just too furious . . . her eyes too heartbroken.

Suddenly, Callie stops crying. Her eyes flash with fury just seconds before she slaps me across the face.

Despite the ringing in my ears, I can hear my brother’s warning.

Don’t be an asshole tonight.

Too late.

One bridesmaid.
One groomsman.
One classic wedding hookup.

But for Callie and Devin, their weekend of passion is anything but typical.

Callie Franklin doesn’t do one night stands.

Ever.

She’s far too responsible and focused on her career to ever let herself give in to temptation.

But, on the eve of her best friend’s wedding, she meets that temptation . . .

And his name is Devin McAllister.

Devin, on the other hand, has no problem with meaningless hookups. The very last thing he needs—or wants—is a relationship.

Relationships come with strings.

Relationships come with heartbreak.

A late-night encounter in the hotel’s piano bar finds the two unable to resist each other. With her angelic voice and bright blue eyes, Devin’s sure he’s never met anyone as beautiful as his Songbird.

Six weeks later, when two pink lines confirm Callie’s worst fears, she and Devin have to face the consequences of their wild weekend.

And they have to deal with each other—whether they like it or not.

With a love story that’s far from traditional, Callie and Devin begin to wonder if their one-night stand could turn into something neither of them anticipated.
